Oroboros

Oroboros sculpture

Stone and wood: looking down from top

Ouroboros is an ancient serpent symbol that's primarily associated with the Greeks. It is one of the archetypal symbols, and may be as old as human civilization itself. The ouroboros has several meanings interwoven into it. Foremost is the symbolism of the serpent biting, devouring, eating its own tail. This symbolizes the cyclic Nature of the Universe: creation out of destruction, Life out of Death. The ouroboros eats its own tail to sustain its life, in an eternal cycle of renewal. Time, the continuity of life, immortality, infinity, eternity, perfection, completion, the cyclic nature of the universe, the self-sufficiency of nature and the rebirth of the earth, are some of its meanings. The Ouroboros is the Universal Serpent which passes through all things -- "the One, the All."
